setting dropdownlist defaultvalue after databinding

i have given 28 states as a datasource to the dropdownlist..whenever the user enters with id the dropdownlist must populate with his statename not from the first state (A to Z) as it is stored in database..how can i make it?is thr any option to give query as default value to the dropdown?
